Pumping at Work Guide: My tried and true tips

Written by:

Returning to work while exclusively breastfeeding can feel so overwhelming. I created this guide based on the tried-and-true equipment and tips that worked for me when I went back to work with my first daughter. It’s exactly the kind of advice I wish I’d been given back then.

Why I Prefer Traditional Flanges

I initially tried the Momcozy wearable pump, and while it worked well at first, the suction dropped significantly after just a week. I also found that the convenience wasn’t worth the risk; if a wearable isn’t positioned perfectly, it’s very easy to spill your “liquid gold.” For reliability and output, I now strictly stick to pumps with a traditional flange.

Top Pump Recommendations

1. The Spectra S1 & S2

The Spectra S2 (Pink) is usually fully covered by insurance. I used this for my first daughter, and the motor is still going strong three years later!

• The Upgrade: If you have the option, the Spectra S1 (Blue) is worth it. It features a built-in battery, giving you the freedom to pump anywhere without being tethered to a wall.

• Pro Tip: Get an accurate flange size! Most people use a flange that is too large. Use a nipple ruler or guide to find your perfect fit.

2. Baby Buddha

I chose this pump for my second pregnancy, and it truly lives up to the hype. It is compact and portable but has the motor strength of a Spectra.

• Setup: It comes with a silicone cover, and I didn’t even need an adapter. You will need a good pumping bra to keep it hands-free.

• This was also fully covered by my insurance through Aeroflow.

3. Medela Harmony Hand Pump

Never underestimate the “old-fashioned” manual pump. It is reliable, easy to clean, and fits perfectly in a work bag for emergencies.

• Comfort Hack: Medela hand pumps are compatible with Lacteck Silicone Flanges. Switching to silicone flanges from Lacteck was a game-changer for me—it increased my output and made pumping completely pain-free.

Pump Bag Essentials

Here is what I keep in my kit:

• The Bag: A large, dual-compartment lunch bag works best. I store the pump in the bottom and used parts that need washing in the top.

• Mini Cooler: Keep a small, cooler with ice packs for the office fridge to store the liquid gold. 🥛

• Leak Protection: Always pack nipple pads (disposable or reusable) and a spare shirt. Leaks happen when you least expect them!

Storage Solutions

• The Freezer Stash: Use breast milk bags (Medela’s are my favorites) to freeze milk and pull the oldest bags first to ensure nothing expires.

• The “Next Day” Method: Store milk in bottles in the fridge and line them up for the following day. This is the easiest way to prep for especially if you use storage bottles that match the baby’s bottles for the next day.

• No Fridge? If you don’t have an office fridge, invest in a high-quality chilled thermos. See the links below for a couple of products that will keep your breast milk safe for 24 hours.

Cleaning the Equipment

How you handle cleaning depends on how much time you have:

1. If you have time: Keep a dedicated bottle brush and scent-free soap at your desk. Do not leave your brush in the communal breakroom to avoid cross-contamination.

2. If you’re short on time: Buy extra sets of flanges and bottles. Use a fresh set for every session and bring them all home to wash in the dishwasher at the end of the day.

Final Thoughts

Producing milk is heavily connected to your mental state. It’s not just a physical task; it’s an emotional one.

When you sit down to pump, try to consciously relax. Dedicate that time to scrolling through videos of your little one or even FaceTime them if you can. Those visual and emotional cues actually help your milk flow better.

What you are doing, and what you are sacrificing by pumping at work, is such a noble labor of love. It’s hard work, but you are doing an incredible job.
